I attended Anime Milwaukee(AMKE), an anime convention held at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, Wi, this past weekend and had a lot of fun! It us a relatively small convention (hosting about 6,000 people) but it packs a punch. Just like any other convention, AMKE hosts plenty of guest panels, which are mainly voice actors, anime showing, a vendor hall, game room and much more!
I have not been to too many conventions in the past. In fact, AMKE 2014 was my third. I have gone to AMKE in 2013 as well as ACEN in the same year. I only cosplayed at ACEN and I am not sure if I would do it again. I’m a big guy (weight wise) and costumes aren’t made for fatter guys. As such, I was a little turned off of the whole experience. I do however enjoy seeing others in their super creative costumes and look forward to seeing other cosplays.
My favorite part of Anime Milwaukee was definitely the vendor hall. I love seeing all of the toys, statutes, shirts, bags, prints and more. I over spent a bit… Mostly on my fiance though! There were so many alpacas it was insane… Not sure what the resin for this boom was but here are some pics:
See? Alpacas EVERYWHERE! I bought an alpaca shirt, plush, and wallet for my fiance simple because if the cuteness. I also bought my fiance a replica sword used by Rukia in Bleach. We tried finding one at ACEN last year but all the ones that we saw looked to be in rough shape.
The only panel that I had a chance to attend was for an exclusive preview if Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises. Miyazaki had brought us spectacular movies like Howls Moving Castle, Spirited Away and The Secret World of Arietty. This is, supposedly, his “final masterpiece”. Here is the synopsis as found on Wiki:
Jirou dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and thus unable to become a pilot, Jirou joins the aircraft division of a major Japanese engineering company in 1927. His genius is soon recognized, and he grows to become one of the world’s most accomplished airplane designers.
Key historical events deeply affected the course of Jirou’s life, including the great Kanto earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic, and Japan’s plunge into war. He meets and falls in love with Naoko, grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjou, and innovates tremendously, leading the aviation world into the future.
It seems clear from both the synopsis and the preview that I saw, this movie will be heavily history-bases. It is also visually amazing. I honestly can’t wait to see it!
